Caution
Haridwar in May
Uttarakhand, India
May is when the heat arrives. Temperatures push 30-42°C and the ghats bake by midday. But the Ganga still flows cool, and dawn and dusk are bearable. This is peak Char Dham transit season — Haridwar's hotels and dharamshalas are full of pilgrims heading to the high temples. The evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri is packed; arrive by 5 PM for a decent spot. Mango season peaks in the markets. The heat drives most activities to early morning or evening. Rajaji National Park stays open but afternoon safaris are punishing. Carry water, sunscreen, and a hat — the ghats have minimal shade.
The May story
The Ganga Dussehra festival (if in May) is Haridwar's second-biggest event after Kumbh — the celebration of the river's descent from heaven to earth, marked by thousands of floating oil lamps on the water at dusk. If you time it right, the visual is extraordinary. Regular May evenings at Har Ki Pauri: arrive by 5 PM, claim a ghat step, buy a flower-and-lamp offering (₹20-50 from vendors), and launch it into the current. The Mansa Devi cable car is best done at dawn to avoid the afternoon heat — the 7 AM slot has no queue and hilltop temperatures are 5-8°C cooler than the city floor. Rajaji Park morning safaris (5:30 AM entry) are rewarding before the heat stuns everything into stillness. For serious Ganga bathing, the Saptrishi ashram ghat upstream is quieter and cleaner than Har Ki Pauri. Food tip: the lassi stalls near the clock tower area serve thandai (spiced cold milk) that is medicinal in May heat. Stay: ₹2500-5000 mid-range. AC is essential — confirm it works before paying.
