Peak Season
Guptkashi in May
Uttarakhand, India
May is when Guptkashi earns its keep as Kedarnath's base camp. The temple opens (usually first week of May) and the town explodes with activity — pilgrims, porters, ponies, helicopters overhead every few minutes. Temperatures are comfortable at 15-27°C. The Gaurikund-Kedarnath trek is fully operational and at its best weather-wise — clear skies, manageable temperatures at altitude. Room rates in Guptkashi jump to ₹1500-3000. Helicopter seats (₹7000-8000 return) book out weeks in advance. The energy is electric but the crowds are real.
The May story
Kedarnath helicopter booking is the critical logistics item — book through IRCTC or authorized operators minimum 2-3 weeks ahead. Walk-in slots exist but involve 3-4 AM queues at the helipad. The trek from Gaurikund is well-marked with chai stalls every 2-3 km and medical posts at Jungle Chatti and Linchauli. Expect to share the trail with 2000-5000 pilgrims daily in peak May. Ponies cost ₹2500-4000 one way; palki (doli) service runs ₹6000-12000. At Kedarnath temple itself, queue times range 2-6 hours — VIP darshan tickets are not officially available though touts will claim otherwise. Back in Guptkashi, the Vishwanath Temple evening aarti is a calmer alternative — same devotion, zero queue. Food options peak in May: everything from South Indian to Punjabi alongside pahadi staples. The Mandakini river rafting near Tilwara, 30 minutes downstream, is a surprisingly fun addition to the pilgrim circuit.
