May opens Drass tentatively. Temperatures: 2-15°C. The Zoji La may open in late May (date varies annually; check BRO announcements). If it opens, Drass becomes the first stop on the Srinagar-Leh highway, and the character of the town changes overnight from isolated to transit.
The May story
If the Zoji La opens, Drass transforms. Trucks, buses, military convoys, and adventurous tourists flood through. The War Memorial becomes a regular stop, and the parking area fills with vehicles heading to Kargil and Leh. The town's dhabas fire up for the season, and the basic but warming dal-rice-chai combination that sustains highway travellers is surprisingly satisfying at 3,280 metres. The surrounding landscape is spectacular: brown mountains streaked with snow, turquoise glacial streams, and a vastness that makes vehicles look like insects. If the Zoji La is closed (it has opened as late as mid-June), Drass remains quiet. Rooms: ₹800-2,000/night.
