Roads remain snowbound and impassable in March
March loosens Drass's grip slightly. Temperatures climb to -15°C to -2°C, daylight extends meaningfully, and the Zoji La begins the long process toward reopening (usually May-June). The village stirs but winter is not done.
The March story
March is when Drass residents begin the annual transition from survival to life. Snow starts compacting rather than accumulating. The Dras War Memorial becomes more accessible as paths are cleared. The surrounding peaks — some exceeding 5,000 metres — catch March light with a brilliance that January's low sun cannot match. Military convoys prepare for the Zoji La opening, signalling that the siege will lift. Homestay accommodation: ₹500-1,000/night. March Drass is for the patient visitor who understands that cold places have their own calendar.
