Delhi in April
Delhi, India
Heat peaks at 38°C with midday outdoor sightseeing nearly impossible
April heats Delhi to 28-40°C. The city pivots to early-morning and late-evening schedules. But April rewards the heat-tolerant: the city's trees bloom spectacularly — amaltas (golden shower) and gulmohar (flame) transform Delhi's avenues into colour tunnels.
The April story
The tree bloom is genuinely one of Delhi's best-kept visual secrets. Lodhi Road under amaltas canopy, Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) lined with gulmohar, and the Lodhi Garden walkways draped in bougainvillea — Delhi's green cover, planted over centuries by Mughals, British, and Lutyens, peaks in April colour. Monuments are best visited at opening (sunrise) or last hour before close. The National Museum (Janpath, ₹20) is air-conditioned and contains the finest collection of Indian art, sculpture, and textiles in the country — a 3-hour escape from heat that is also genuinely world-class. Mango season peaks. Rooms: ₹1,500-10,000/night.
