Peak Season
Chittorgarh in November
Rajasthan, India
November perfects Chittorgarh. Temperatures of 14-30°C, empty fort grounds, and the gentle light of North Indian autumn turning sandstone to gold. Diwali (if in November) adds oil lamps to the fort's ramparts — a sight that postcards have not yet discovered.
The November story
The Vijay Stambha at golden hour in November is one of India's great architectural experiences. Nine storeys of carved Hindu mythology catching low autumn light while you share the space with maybe five other visitors — this is why Chittorgarh deserves its UNESCO World Heritage status (currently on the tentative list). November allows the 6-hour comprehensive fort visit without heat concern. The Meera temple, Rana Kumbha's palace, the three jauhar sites, and the two stambhas can all be covered with breaks for tea at the fort's small canteen. Rooms: ₹800-2,000/night.
