The February story
This is photographer's month. Low winter sun, clear atmosphere, and the Panchachuli range still heavy with snow — the conditions for Himalayan photography do not improve on this. The walk through Chaukori's tea gardens (even dormant, the terraced rows against mountain backdrop are stunning) takes about an hour and is worth doing daily as light changes. Berinag, 10 km away, offers another Himalayan viewpoint plus the Bagnath temple — a stone temple complex with genuine antiquity. The road to Munsiyari (80 km further) is open and spectacular. Rooms: ₹600-1,200/night.
