The June story
Wet Champawat is for romantics who do not need sunshine to feel happy. The stone temples darken with rain and their carvings become more dramatic — deeper shadows, stronger contrasts, moss creeping into corners as it has for eight centuries. Leeches appear on forest trails but the town lanes remain clear. The road to Pancheshwar is more dramatic in monsoon — waterfalls appear on every cliff face — but requires a confident driver. Kumaoni homes cook with monsoon greens that do not appear in any other season. Rooms: ₹400-800/night. June is Champawat for archaeology of the soul.
