Caution
Chamba in July
Himachal Pradesh, India
July is peak monsoon. Chamba receives 300-400mm, the Ravi roars, and the surrounding hills disappear into cloud. The Minjar fair (late July, sometimes early August) begins — Chamba's biggest celebration, a week-long harvest festival with roots older than most Indian states.
The July story
Minjar is the reason to come in July. The festival opens with a royal procession on the Chaugan, followed by a week of folk music, traditional Gaddi dances, markets, and rituals culminating in offerings to the Ravi. It is a genuine people's festival — not packaged for tourists but not excluding them either. The mela ground sells Chamba chappals, Gaddi shawls, and food that ranges from familiar to adventurous. Between festival events, the rain-soaked town has a brooding beauty: clouds threading between temple towers, waterfalls appearing on hillsides that are dry nine months of the year. Rooms spike during Minjar week (₹1,500-3,000/night) — book early.
