Underrated Rajasthan stop — fewer touts than Jaipur, haveli homestays (Bundi Haveli, Hadee Rani) are women-owned. Safer than Bundi-proper station area.
Bundi is a hidden gem — a crumbling Rajput town with spectacular stepwells, a hilltop palace with famous murals, and very few tourists. It was Rudyard Kipling's favorite Indian town. Authentic, uncommercial Rajasthan.
Relaxed. Modest clothing when visiting temples. Comfortable shoes essential for climbing to Taragarh Fort.

Dozens of 300-year-old havelis with painted facades in various states of beautiful decay. No signs, no tickets, no tourists. Just wander.
Walk the cusped-arch verandah where Kipling wrote his "the work of goblins rather than of men" line about Bundi. Cross the cenotaph chhatris on the embankment for the sunset reflection of Taragarh on Jait Sagar — the exact view Kipling described as "a palace such as men build in uneasy dreams". Free of the Garh Palace ticket queue and almost empty even in peak season.
Read the Sanskrit Vikrama-Samvat 1226 inscription up close (with an ASI signboard translation), then walk the Mandakini Kund and step inside Undeshwar — a unique sub-terranean Shiva shrine where the lingam sits below the kund water level. Bundi-school painters sketched here too; the Jain pancha-tirtha cluster is a separate Parshvanath complex.

2008 में बूंदी के गढ़ महल की प्राचीर में सीधे बनी 7 कमरों की हवेली, जिसे 40 फुट पत्थर की मेहराब से होकर पैदल पहुँचा जाता है। छत की छत पर रात का खाना परोसा जाता है, जहाँ से रोशनी में नहाया महल और नीचे गहरा नीला पुराना शहर दिखता है।
Tip: रात का खाना एक ही सत्र में, तय मेन्यू, निवासियों को प्राथमिकता। यदि आप बाहरी हैं तो दोपहर तक कॉल करें; रसोई केवल छत के लिए थालियाँ गिनती है।
