Fair
Barot Valley in November
Himachal Pradesh, India
November brings Barot's autumn finale. The deodars stay green but deciduous trees turn gold, the river clears to its clearest, and the first frost appears on morning grass. The valley is nearly empty of visitors. Homestay fires are lit again.
The November story
November strips Barot to its essentials: the river, the track, the forest, and the cold. The rail-track walk in November morning frost, with your breath visible and the valley in shadow while sunlight creeps down the ridge, is one of Himachal's finest walking experiences. The Uhl river is at its clearest — trout are visible in the pools, though the fishing season may have closed. The deciduous trees have turned and are dropping leaves into the water, creating golden eddies. Homestay fires are lit from afternoon onward. The food — siddu (steamed buns), madra (chickpea curry), and mountain dal — is at its warming best. November visitors are rare enough to be treated as friends, not customers. The Nargu sanctuary is quiet; if you're lucky and patient, you might hear a barking deer or see a monal flash across the track. November Barot is earned, not consumed.
