June at Ajanta is the transition — first 2 weeks remain in plateau-summer territory (25-38°C, dust-haze, dangerous cliff-trail), then the South-West monsoon onset around Jun 15-20 brings 22-30°C relief plus a rare phenomenon: the Waghora River below Cave 17 fills up and the small waterfall across the horseshoe canyon starts flowing. This is the only time Ajanta has a waterfall view — a rewarding sight but offset by slippery cave-floor steps and heavy rain bursts. Closed Monday.
The June story
Time visit to post-Jun-20 if at all. Pre-monsoon first half: skip. Post-onset: cave interiors stay cool, the exterior horseshoe-canyon greens up modestly (Deccan monsoon is moderate vs Sahyadri), and the Waghora waterfall appears across from Cave 17 — photogenic from the viewpoint at the gorge end. ASI ticket ₹40 + ₹40 shuttle as usual. Strong torch essential. Watch for slippery cave-floor stones — wet basalt is treacherous. The 3-4 km cliff-trail muddy in heavy rain. Aurangabad hotels (Vivanta, Welcomhotel, Lemon Tree) at mid-rates as June progresses; rates climb late month into July. Buddha Purnima May 26 done; next Buddhist anchor is the more general post-monsoon Buddhist tourism flow Oct-Feb. Driving: NH-211 between Aurangabad and Ajanta needs daylight + caution in heavy bursts. ASI hours 9am-5:30pm. Bring waterproof shoes — cave-base 3-4 km walk in monsoon is grim without proper gear.
