April at Ajanta enters plateau-summer broil — 23-40°C, the exposed horseshoe cliff-base trail genuinely dangerous past 9am, the 3-4 km walk between the 30 caves turning into a heat-stroke risk by 11am. Cave interiors themselves stay cool (basalt insulates at 18-24°C) but the only way to reach them is across exposed open trail. ASI shuttle from gate stays at 4 km — that drop-off point still exposed. Tourist numbers crash; locals mostly absent. Closed Monday.

Skip unless forced — and if forced, start absolutely at 5:30am from Aurangabad, gate at 7am, on-trail by 7:30am, in caves until 9am, off-trail by 9:30am, in AC car back to Aurangabad by 11am. Cave 1, 2 are closer to shuttle drop-off; visit those first. Cave 16, 17, 19, 26 are further down — only attempt if you're still strong by 8:30am. The horseshoe-canyon viewpoint (15-min climb at gorge far end) — skip in April, exposed sun and zero shade. ASI ticket ₹40/₹600 + ₹40 shuttle. Cave interiors cool (carry scarf for temperature drop) but exterior brutally hot. Avoid afternoon arrival. Aurangabad hotels at deep off-peak (40%+ discounts on Vivanta, Welcomhotel, Lemon Tree). Naan-qalia and dum biryani at Aurangabad's Bhoj, Madina, Tara Paan run lunch indoors. The Buddha Purnima (May 26 2026) is one month away — some Buddhist pilgrims start arriving April for early pradakshina, but most wait for cooler weather.
