July at Ajanta is full monsoon — 22-29°C, 200-300mm rain, daily bursts, the Waghora River below Cave 17 at peak flow with the small waterfall across the horseshoe canyon photogenic from the viewpoint at the gorge's far end. Cave interiors stay cool and dry (basalt insulates and the entrances face the cliff inward) but the 3-4 km cliff-trail between caves is wet and slippery. The painted Bodhisattva Padmapani in Cave 1, the Jataka-tale ceilings in Cave 17, the Mahaparinirvana in Cave 26 — all viewable in strong torch light despite weather. Closed Monday.
The July story
Time visit to a mid-July window when forecasts cluster 3-4 dry days. The Waghora waterfall is a real bonus — visible only in monsoon, photographable from horseshoe-canyon viewpoint. ASI ticket ₹40 + ₹40 mandatory shuttle. Carry waterproof grippy shoes — slippery basalt is the main risk on the 3-4 km cliff-base trail. Strong torch for painted-cave interiors. Cave 16 (Buddha-as-Nagaraja) and Cave 17 (vast Jataka ceiling) at their atmospheric best in monsoon dimming. Aurangabad 100 km away as base — Vivanta, Welcomhotel, Lemon Tree at monsoon-shoulder rates. Driving NH-211 between Aurangabad and Ajanta needs daylight; avoid heavy-burst evenings. Eco-shuttle 4 km from gate runs through monsoon. Hotel: book Vivanta or Welcomhotel 7-10 days ahead for moderate pricing. Food: gate canteen runs, plus naan-qalia at Aurangabad's Bhoj, dum biryani at Madina. AQI good (monsoon flushes).
