Ahmedabad in April
Gujarat, India
Skip if you can — the heritage circuit is materially worse in April. Use Nov-Feb instead.
April is when Ahmedabad's status as one of India's hottest plains cities asserts itself — 28-41C, dry-burning afternoons, and a walled-city density that traps heat between pol walls. Sabarmati riverfront breeze disappears by 9am, and the pol-house photography window collapses to one hour at 6am.
The April story
The walled city's monuments are open, but the experience is genuinely diminished. Heritage walks should be at 5.30am sunrise only — Bhadra Fort, Teen Darwaza, Manek Chowk reconnaissance — finish by 8am. Then move to AC interiors: Calico Museum of Textiles (10.30am tour by advance booking, 25-visitor cap), Baroda Museum, Hutheesing Jain Temple's shaded courtyard. The mall-anchor lunch is Vishalla or Agashiye House of MG (AC interiors). Sabarmati Ashram is best at sunset only — the open lawns burn from 11am-5pm. Lothal day trip (80km) is too hot for the open-air dockyard. Hotels cheaper as bookings dip. Hyatt's pool deck becomes the saving grace. If you must visit in April, plan a hotel-anchored 2 days, not the heritage-walk 4-day itinerary.
