Gir National Park in April
Gujarat, India
Go for photographers — heat compresses to morning-only but lion sightings peak.
April at Gir is paradoxical — peak heat at 25-40C means the safari window compresses to 6-9am morning slots, but lion sightings reach near-guaranteed reliability as the entire pride converges on the surviving waterholes. Heat-tolerant wildlife photographers consider April the peak month.
The April story
April is when Gir's Asiatic lion concentration story tells itself in full — the dry deciduous forest is parched, the waterholes have shrunk to a handful of locations across 1,412 sq km, and the lions have no choice but to use them. Morning safaris (6-9am) deliver near-guaranteed lion sightings at Kamleshwar Dam, Sinh Sadan area waterholes, and the Hiran River basin. The trade-off is heat: 40C by 10am, jeep tracks become dust-clouded, and the afternoon safari (3-6pm) operates only on cooler days. Photography is at peak performance for those who can handle the heat. The Maldhari nesses operate at reduced visitor flow. Reschedule any non-Gir activity to dawn or evening.
