Dev Deepawali, extreme heat, and flooded ghats — scored

Varanasi by Season — Scored
Varanasi is 3,000 years old and does not care about your comfort. The Ganges floods, the sun punishes, and the crowds never stop. But timing it right transforms a chaotic city into something transcendent.
Oct–Dec — Score: 5/5
This is the window. Temperature: 15-28°C. Humidity drops. The ghats are walkable without drowning in sweat. And in November, Dev Deepawali happens — over a million diyas (oil lamps) float on the Ganges. It is one of the most visually stunning events in India.
Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat hits different when it's not 42°C. Boat rides at sunrise are crisp and clear. Sarnath (10km away, where Buddha gave his first sermon) is comfortable to explore.
**Kids score: 3/5.** The ghats have steep steps, cremation grounds are confronting for young children, and the old city lanes are narrow and chaotic. Kids above 10 will find it fascinating. Below that, plan carefully.
Jan–Feb — Score: 4/5
Cold mornings (5-10°C), foggy sunrise boat rides which can be atmospheric or frustrating depending on your tolerance. The fog lifts by 10am usually. Fewer tourists than Oct-Dec. Kite festival in January is a local highlight — the sky above the ghats fills with thousands of kites.
Mar–Apr — Score: 3/5
Holi in Varanasi (March) is legendary but intense. Temperature climbs past 35°C by April. The window is closing.
May–Jun — Score: 1/5
45°C+ is not unusual. The ghats become an oven. Heatstroke is a real risk. Locals themselves stay indoors. Do not come unless you have a very specific reason.
Jul–Sep (Monsoon) — Score: 2/5
The Ganges floods. Lower ghats go underwater. Boat rides may be cancelled. The upside: the city is lush, tourist crowds vanish, and you see Varanasi as locals live it. But the practical downsides are significant.
Infrastructure
Varanasi has Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata. The old city is pedestrian-only — no cars, only cycle rickshaws and walking. Hotels range from ₹500 dormitories to ₹15,000 heritage havelis on the ghats. WiFi is unreliable in the old city. ATMs exist but carry cash.
The Verdict
Nov is the single best month. Oct-Dec is the safe window. May-Jun is genuinely dangerous heat.
