The December story

The December fog creates something no other month can: a sense of the eternal. The burning ghats visible through shifting mist, temple bells muffled by fog, and figures materializing from white nothing along the water's edge — this is the Varanasi that Mark Twain called "older than history." The boat ride requires commitment (5:30AM, near-freezing on the water) but rewards you with a private, almost mystical river experience. The fog usually lifts by 10AM to reveal clear blue skies and pleasant sunshine for the rest of the day. Ganga Mahotsav cultural festival (if December) brings classical music and dance to the ghats. The old city's sweet shops are at their best — jalebi, rabri, and the famous Banarasi paan. Street vendors sell roasted peanuts and sweet potatoes from coal braziers — the smell is December Varanasi. The silk showrooms are warm and welcoming, and winter is the best time to buy heavy Banarasi silk because you can actually drape it without sweating. Evenings on the ghats are cold enough that the aarti fire feels physically warming, not just spiritually.
