Best Time to Visit Rajasthan
Heat vs heritage — the 6 months that matter
Destinations in this article
Rajasthan is two different places. October-March: a dreamscape of golden forts, desert camps, and crisp mornings. April-September: a furnace that regularly exceeds 45°C. Plan accordingly.
October-February: The Only Season (Score 5/5)
Every Rajasthan destination scores 5/5 during this window. Jaisalmer fort glows golden in winter light. Jodhpur's Blue City is walkable. Udaipur's lakes are full from monsoon. Jaipur's forts are comfortable to explore. Desert camping under clear cold skies is magical.
October and February are the sweet spots — peak season rates haven't kicked in (October) or are winding down (February). December-January is peak pricing.
March: The Last Comfortable Month (Score 4/5)
Holi celebrations are spectacular across Rajasthan. Jaipur and Jodhpur colours festivals are world-famous. Temperature 15-32°C — warm afternoons but manageable mornings. After March, it's over.
April-June: The Furnace (Score 1-2/5)
Jaisalmer can hit 50°C. Fort sandstone burns bare feet. Desert sand radiates heat at night. Jodhpur's Mehrangarh ramparts become an oven by 10am. Hotels drop rates 70% — there's a reason. This isn't discomfort, it's dangerous. Heatstroke kills tourists who underestimate Rajasthan summers.
July-September: Monsoon Surprise (Score 2-3/5)
Rajasthan gets light monsoon — enough to green the desert briefly and fill Udaipur's lakes, not enough to ruin trips. Humidity rises. Some flooding in old town lanes. But: post-monsoon September is when the desert turns briefly green. Photographers love it. Budget travelers benefit from empty hotels.
Kids: 5/5 (Jaisalmer, Udaipur), 4/5 (Jodhpur, Jaipur)
Rajasthan is India's best family destination. Flat terrain. Camels, forts, palaces, lake boats — kids love all of it. Excellent hospitals in all major cities. Full network. The only rule: avoid April-June with children. The heat is not something to manage around — it's something to avoid entirely.
