Where the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga meet: the first of five sacred confluences.
Month by month
Why Special
Vishnuprayag marks the confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers in Chamoli district. This is the highest and first of the Panch Prayag, at 1,372m. The site holds a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Pilgrims bathe at the ghat before proceeding downstream to the other four confluences. The town is small but accessible via the Badrinath highway, which remains open year-round. Combined with nearby Auli (ski resort) and the Chopta trek route, Vishnuprayag fits into larger Garhwal circuits.
