Gopinath Temple.
Gopeshwar is mostly known as the Chamoli district HQ and a transit stop on the Joshimath road; few pilgrims realise this is where Rudranath actually lives in winter.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
An ancient stone temple in the heart of Gopeshwar town, the official winter abode of Lord Rudranath — when Panch Kedar's third temple closes by November snowfall, the deity is carried down here for six months of worship. The temple itself predates most of the Garhwal pilgrimage circuit; the iron trishul outside the sanctum is rumoured to never rust despite open exposure for centuries. Best: Year-round; Nov-Apr is when the deity is in residence (the only time you can have darshan of the Rudranath idol without the 22km trek).. Reach: Within Gopeshwar town, walking distance from the bus stand. The temple is open dawn to dusk with a midday closure.. Tip: Free entry. Check the iron trishul behind the temple — locals say the lack of rust is the proof. Modest dress, leather items off before entering. If on a Panch Kedar circuit, time your visit between Nov and Apr for the winter abode darshan..
