Uttarakhand · Garhwal · 3,680m🚗 SUV to Chopta — then trek only
👨👩👧 Family: moderate-high — requires 5km trek at altitude, not for very young children
The highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680m — a 3.5km trek through rhododendron forests with Chandrashila peak summit as the reward.
Tungnath is the highest of the Panch Kedar Shiva temples at 3,680m, over 1,000 years old. The 3.5km trek from Chopta passes through stunning rhododendron forests (blooming red in April-May). From Tungnath, a further 1.5km steep climb reaches Chandrashila summit (4,000m) with 360-degree views of Nanda Devi, Trisul, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba peaks. Chopta is called "Mini Switzerland" but unlike Switzerland, it costs ₹500/night.
