Trekking gear for the trail. At the temple, dress conservatively — cover arms and legs. Remove shoes before entering. Carry warm layers as it is extremely cold and windy at the summit.

Food Safety

One or two seasonal tea stalls on the trek route selling Maggi and chai. No proper restaurants. Carry all food and water from Chopta. Only bottled water.

When Tungnath closes for winter (Nov-Apr), the deity doesn't go dormant — the silver utsava-murti is processioned down via Chopta-Mastura-Makkumath to the Markandeshwar Temple, where a continuous puja schedule runs through deep winter. The temple is small (~12m square stone shrine, 9th-c. architecture) and gets perhaps 5-10 outside visitors a day even in peak season. Re-installation at Tungnath happens every Akshaya Tritiya (Apr-May) with a full procession. The bhog parshad (besan-and-ghee laddoo) is given by the Maithani Brahmin priests who serve both shrines on a hereditary basis.

Deoria Tal sits in a depression above Sari (1980m), reached via a stone-paved 3km path through oak and rhododendron. Skanda Purana names it Indra Sarovar — said to be the lake where the Yaksha (forest-spirit) interrogated Yudhishthira in the Mahabharata before the Pandavas were granted entry to Swarg. The reflection of Chaukhamba peaks 7138m is best 5:45-6:15am pre-dawn before any breeze stirs the surface; mid-day it's still beautiful but the mirror effect fades. Camping is permitted (Forest Dept permit from Ukhimath); 12-15 small tents form a temporary camp Apr-Oct. Closed-water-body bathing prohibited (sacred site).
★★★★★◦A 2438m alpine lake reached by a 3km walk from Sari village — when the wind drops at dawn, the surface reflects the entire Chaukhamba massif (7138m) like a polished mirror. Tour groups skip it because it's a side trip off the Chopta-Tungnath axis.
