Tungnath in June
Uttarakhand, India
Go in June—all trails are open, mornings stay clear for summit views, but start early to avoid afternoon clouds and carry storm gear.
Peak crowds
June is one of Tungnath's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Getting popular on Instagram. Chopta base camp packed on long weekends. Chandrashila sunrise less crowded.
June is Tungnath in full bloom — 5-15°C at the temple, meadows carpeted with wildflowers, the trek comfortable in good weather. Pre-monsoon afternoons build cloud but mornings are clear. The Chandrashila summit at dawn — 360-degree Himalayan panorama — is one of India's great viewpoints. Char Dham pilgrims add to the traffic at Chopta. Book ahead for Chopta accommodation.
The June story
June Tungnath is May with wildflowers. The alpine meadows between Chopta and the temple (above the rhododendron zone) are carpeted in blue, yellow, and purple. The Chandrashila dawn trek is the experience that adventure travel magazines write about — headlamp start, forest climb, emerge above treeline, reach the summit as the sun hits the Himalayan crest. The pre-monsoon weather gives reliable morning clarity. The temple is fully active — Char Dham pilgrims add spiritual energy. Chopta fills up. Hotels at ₹1,000-2,000. The camping options around Chopta meadow are excellent in June. By late June, monsoon approaches and conditions become uncertain. The first two weeks of June are the sweet spot.
Why June scores 8.0/10
