Tungnath in May
Uttarakhand, India
Go in May — rhododendrons peak and Chandrashila views are clearest, but start by 5am to beat crowds and afternoon clouds.
Peak crowds
May is one of Tungnath's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Getting popular on Instagram. Chopta base camp packed on long weekends. Chandrashila sunrise less crowded.
May opens Tungnath properly. The temple reopens (date varies, usually after Akshaya Tritiya). The 3.5km trek from Chopta through rhododendron and alpine meadow is at its most beautiful. The Chandrashila summit push (1.5km beyond the temple, reaching 4,000m) gives panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba. Temperatures at 0-12°C at the temple. Pilgrims and trekkers begin arriving.
The May story
May Tungnath delivers on every promise. The temple reopens with ceremony. The trek through fully bloomed rhododendron forest to the world's highest Shiva temple is one of India's great short treks. The temple itself is small (about 12 feet by 15 feet), stone-built, and ancient — prayer flags, a weathered Nandi, and a low doorway you duck to enter. The puja inside is simple and powerful. Then the Chandrashila push: 1.5km of above-treeline climbing to a 4,000m summit that shows Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath peak, Chaukhamba, Bandarpunch, and the Gangotri group. On a clear May morning, this is India's best effort-to-reward ratio in trekking. Chopta accommodation fills weekends — book ahead. The afternoon cloud means the summit is a morning mission: start at 4-5am from Chopta, reach the summit by 7-8am for clear views.
