Solan in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
February stays cool — 4-16°C. Solan's orchards begin stirring. The Mohan Meakin brewery complex (established 1855) is atmospheric in winter light. The town's low-key nature is its appeal — no tourist hustle, just a functional Himachal town. The road to Shimla (45km) is clear. Kasauli (30km) makes an easy day trip. The mushroom research centre at Chambaghat receives agricultural visitors.
The February story
February Solan is for the traveller who appreciates ordinary. The brewery visit (ask at the gate — formal tours aren't always available, but a polite inquiry often works) reveals colonial industrial architecture and the equipment that produces India's most famous rum. The town market sells winter woolens at local prices. Kasauli (30km, 1 hour) is the more conventionally attractive day trip — a tiny cantonment town with colonial-era Christ Church and Monkey Point views. Dagshai (22km), a former British military station, has an old jail museum and cemetery worth an hour. The Shimla-Kalka heritage railway experience can be done from Solan station itself — catch it to Shimla and back in a day. February accommodation at ₹600-1,000. Solan isn't trying to impress — it's the travel equivalent of comfortable shoes.
