Solan in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
January's chill (4–14°C) keeps crowds away but demands warm layers for comfort
January Solan is cold but not extreme — 2-14°C. Himachal's mushroom capital (produces 50%+ of India's button mushrooms) continues its fungiculture through winter. The Mohan Meakin brewery — one of Asia's oldest, makers of Old Monk rum — operates year-round. The town is a quiet transit point between Chandigarh and Shimla. Winter fog hangs in the valley. The Shoolini Devi temple on the hilltop is peaceful.
The January story
January Solan is a no-pretence stop on the Chandigarh-Shimla route. The Mohan Meakin brewery complex — the company that gave India Old Monk rum, founded by an Englishman in 1855 and still operating — is worth a visit for industrial heritage alone. The Shoolini Devi temple on the hill above town gives views of the surrounding Shivalik ranges in winter clarity. The mushroom farms at Chambaghat are a peculiar but genuine attraction — Solan produces over 5,000 tonnes annually, and the research centre welcomes visitors. The heritage railway from Kalka to Shimla passes through Solan — the Barog tunnel (1,143m long, built 1903) and the station architecture are charming. Hotels at ₹500-1,000. Solan asks nothing of you and offers exactly what it is: a working Himachal town with an oddly interesting brewery, a mushroom obsession, and a heritage railway connection.
