Sinthan Top in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
January buries Sinthan Top under deep snow — 3,748m, -15 to -5°C. The pass connecting Kashmir Valley to Kishtwar is completely closed. The road (NH-244) is impassable. The meadows that bloom in summer are frozen under a white expanse. Even the nearest settlements are largely snowbound. This is one of J&K's newest tourist roads and January is not its time.
The January story
No payoff — the pass is closed and inaccessible. Use January to plan your summer visit. Sinthan Top is one of India's newest high-altitude road experiences — the NH-244 connecting Anantnag (Kashmir) to Kishtwar was only designated as a national highway recently, and the road improvements that followed have opened a region that was previously expedition-only. The approach from Daksum through alpine forest to open meadow to the pass is a transition from Kashmir gentleness to Himalayan severity in 50km. Plan for July-September. Book a vehicle comfortable on mountain roads — this is not a highway drive.
