Sinthan Top in February
Jammu & Kashmir, India
February is Sinthan Top's coldest month — -20°C possible at the pass. Snow depth at its maximum. The road won't open for months. The Margan Top and Sinthan Top sections are buried under avalanche-prone snowfields. No access, no infrastructure, no reason to attempt. Plan for July-September instead.
The February story
No access. The pass is at maximum winter severity. Use February to research the route: the Anantnag-Daksum-Sinthan Top-Kishtwar drive covers three climatic zones in one day. The Kashmir side is temperate forest (pine, deodar, walnut). The pass zone is alpine meadow. The Kishtwar side drops through arid terrain to the Chenab river. The entire drive can be done in one long day (10-12 hours) but deserves an overnight at Daksum on the way up. No organised tours operate this route — you need a private vehicle with a mountain-experienced driver.
