Shimla in May
Himachal Pradesh, India
Peak season pricing triples while crowds overwhelm the Mall Road
Peak crowds
May is one of Shimla's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Mall Road on weekends is a nightmare. Summer weekends see 10x normal traffic. Winter weekdays are magical.
May is when Shimla stops being a town and becomes a theme park. School holidays unleash a tsunami from the plains — families, tour groups, honeymoon couples — all escaping 45°C Delhi and Chandigarh heat for Shimla's 18-28°C. Mall Road becomes a slow-shuffle pedestrian crush. The Ridge is standing-room only. NH-5 backs up from Shogi (20 km before Shimla) with traffic jams lasting 2-3 hours on weekends. Parking in Shimla is a competitive sport — the lifts from Cart Road to Mall Road run at full capacity with 30-minute queues. Every hotel, every restaurant, every pony ride operator is at maximum pricing.
The May story
If you must come in May, strategy matters. Arrive Monday-Thursday to dodge the weekend tsunami. Stay in Mashobra or Naldehra (20-25 km from Mall Road) instead of central Shimla — you get the climate without the crowd. The Kalka-Shimla toy train books out 2-3 weeks ahead in May; IRCTC tatkal quota is your only last-minute option. The train itself is still wonderful — the crowds are at the stations, not on the train. Christ Church at 6 AM, before tour buses arrive, is worth the early alarm. Kufri is a circus — ponies, plastic wrappers, tour groups shouting — skip it entirely and drive to Narkanda (60 km) for a quieter hill experience. The Shimla-Kufri road gets traffic jams rivalling Mall Road. Jakhu Temple has ropeway access now (₹500 return) which beats the steep walk in summer heat. Scandal Point ice cream vendors charge 2x normal. The honest truth: May Shimla is a fundamentally different experience from shoulder-season Shimla. You're paying peak prices for the worst version of the town. Come in April or October instead.
