Shimla in April
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in April — apple blossoms peak, weather sits perfectly at 12–24°C, and crowds arrive after mid-month, so go early.
April is Shimla at its most liveable. Temperatures hit 12-22°C — warm enough for a single layer during the day, cool enough for a light jacket at night. The entire hillside blooms: rhododendrons peak in reds and pinks, wild roses line the walking paths, and the deodar forests smell fresh from spring rain. Tourist numbers are modest — the May-June flood hasn't started. Mall Road is walkable, The Ridge is photogenic, and the Kalka-Shimla toy train runs through tunnels framed by flowering hillsides. NH-5 is in excellent condition. This is Shimla before it becomes a spectacle.
The April story
April rewards walkers. The Heritage Walk circuit — Scandal Point, Gaiety Theatre, Gorton Castle, Ellerslie, Barnes Court — can be done in 3 hours without dodging tour groups. The Glen, a forested trail 4 km below Mall Road, is at peak beauty with wildflowers and bird activity (look for Himalayan bulbuls and white-crested laughingthrushes). Prospect Hill hike (5 km round trip) gives 360-degree views of the Shimla ridge with the snow line still visible on the far Himalayan range. Kufri is green — no snow, but Fagu and Narkanda (60 km toward Kinnaur) still have late-season patches if you need a fix. The Shimla-Kalka toy train in April is NakshIQ's top recommendation for the route: wildflowers, mild weather, open windows, and the 102 tunnels feel adventurous rather than cold. Indian Coffee House stays packed with students from HPU — good energy, ₹30 filter coffee. Naldehra golf course is in good spring condition. Baljees on Mall Road does solid rajma-chawal and hot chocolate. Room rates hold at reasonable shoulder levels — ₹1,500-2,500 for quality stays. Book the toy train 2 weeks ahead; April availability is easier than May-June.
