Sarahan in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
Subzero nights make trekking and orchard exploration impractical without specialized cold-weather gear
February continues winter but with lengthening days. The Bhimakali Temple complex — a masterwork of Kinnauri-Bushahr wooden architecture — is almost empty of visitors. The Himalayan panorama (Shrikhand Mahadev, 5,227m) is at its clearest. Snow may linger around the temple. The village's terraced orchards await spring. The quiet is remarkable — you hear the temple bells from a kilometre away.
The February story
February Sarahan is for temple devotees and birders. The Bhimakali aarti in a nearly empty temple, with incense smoke rising through cold air and bell sound echoing off ancient wood, is an experience that busy-season visits can't replicate. The western tragopan — blue face, red breast, spotted white — is best spotted in the quiet of February mornings. The Himalayan monal in its iridescent breeding plumage starts displaying. Sarahan Bird Sanctuary (adjacent to the village) is small but productive. The temple guesthouse and a few village homestays are the only accommodation — ₹300-800. Bring your own snacks and a good book. The isolation is the point. The drive from Shimla passes through Narkanda, Rampur, and the Sutlej gorge — 7 hours of increasingly dramatic scenery.
