Sarahan in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
Subzero nights and heavy snow make trekking routes inaccessible
January in Sarahan is cold mountain winter — -2 to 10°C. The Bhimakali Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, wears snow on its multi-tiered wooden roofs. The apple orchards are bare. The bird-watching trails are quiet but winter species — the Himalayan monal (Himachal's state bird), koklass pheasant, and western tragopan — are more visible against bare branches. The Bushahr dynasty's ancient seat has a frozen dignity.
The January story
January Sarahan is the Bhimakali Temple without interruption. This is one of India's great temple complexes — two interconnected towers of wood and stone, built by the Bushahr dynasty over centuries, housing a Shakti Peetha deity that draws devotees but not tourist hordes. The carved wooden doors, silver-embossed panels, and the sacrificial courtyard are best studied slowly, which January allows. The temple guesthouse (₹300-500) is basic but atmospheric — you sleep in the temple compound. The bird-watching in surrounding forests rewards patience: the western tragopan, one of the world's most endangered pheasants, is spotted here more consistently than almost anywhere else in its range. Early morning walks through the frosted orchards to the viewpoint above the village are cold (wear everything you own) but the Shrikhand Mahadev view is the reward.
