Manali in April
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in April — apple blossoms peak, daytime temps hit 15–20°C, and crowds remain light before summer rush.
April is Manali's quiet golden window. Apple orchards across Prini, Naggar, and the left bank burst into white-pink blossoms — the valley looks like a watercolour painting for about three weeks. Temperatures sit at a comfortable 10-20°C during the day, dropping to 3-5°C at night. Snow has retreated to above 3,000m, so Solang Valley is green with snow-capped peaks as backdrop rather than a snow playground. NH-21 is clear and the drive from Chandigarh is smooth. Tourist numbers are low — school is in session, summer holidays haven't started — making this arguably the best month for anyone who values space over spectacle.
The April story
The apple blossom season is the headline, but April delivers on multiple fronts. River rafting on the Beas opens up — the 14 km Pirdi-to-Jhiri stretch runs Grade II-III rapids with snowmelt giving the river genuine power. Expect ₹800-1,200 per person for the full run. Trekking conditions are ideal: the Hampta Valley, Lamadugh, and Bhrigu Lake approach trails are snow-free at lower stretches with wildflowers starting. Old Manali is fully operational — every cafe, every bakery, every rooftop — without the queue times that define May-June. Hadimba Temple sits in a green deodar grove, not the dusty chaos it becomes in peak season. The Naggar-Jana waterfall day circuit (40 km round trip) is spectacular with full water flow. Rohtang Pass is still closed — BRO clearing is underway but it typically opens late May. Room rates are 30-40% below May-June peaks. This is the locals' favourite month, and they're right.
