Manali in June
Himachal Pradesh, India
June is Manali at maximum volume. School holidays continue, Rohtang Pass is fully open, and every hotel room in the valley is occupied. Mall Road traffic hits absurd levels â locals avoid it entirely. Temperatures are warm at 18-28°C, which draws the plains crowd escaping 45°C Delhi summers. The Atal Tunnel to Lahaul runs at full capacity with permit-controlled traffic. Pre-monsoon humidity starts building in the second half, and by late June, you can smell rain coming. This is commercially peak Manali â every activity operator, every restaurant, every taxi driver is at maximum pricing.
The June story
Rohtang Pass is the main event â fully open, snow walls lining the road, and Lahaul Valley accessible beyond. The 1,200 daily vehicle permits sell out days in advance; book on the HPTDC portal the moment they release. Beyond Rohtang, Sissu and Tandi in Lahaul offer a stark, high-altitude landscape completely different from green Manali. Atal Tunnel (9.02 km, world's longest above 10,000 ft) is an experience in itself â the drive through takes 15 minutes. Solang Valley is now a paragliding hub: tandem flights cost âđ2,500-3,500 and give you 15-20 minutes over the valley. River rafting on the Beas peaks with strong current â the Pirdi-Jhiri stretch runs Grade III consistently. Old Manali is wall-to-wall backpackers â good energy if you're in your 20s, exhausting otherwise. Jogini Waterfall trail is overcrowded; go before 7 AM or skip it. The Manali-Leh Highway opens in June â this is the month the motorcycle convoys start rolling through. Noise, diesel fumes, and adventure all mixed together.
