Lonavala in January
Maharashtra, India
Wait — dry-season Lonavala works for caves and forts but skip if you came for Bhushi cascades; Jul-Aug is the marquee window.
January Lonavala is the dry-season version — 625m elevation, 10-28°C, clear ridges, no fog. Bhushi Dam is empty channel-stone instead of a cascade, but the trade-off is Tiger Point and Lion's Point both visible end-to-end across the Sahyadri valleys. Maganlal Chikki shops (originating 1880) on Bazaar Road still draw the Mumbai-Pune expressway weekend traffic for fudge and chikki packs, but the town breathes between Saturday peaks.
The January story
Drive in via NH-48 from Mumbai (96km, ~2.5hr) or Pune (64km, ~1.5hr) — both expressway tunnels work fine in dry weather. Do Karla and Bhaja caves 11km off-ridge for the 2nd century BCE Buddhist rock-cut work, climb to Lohagad Fort (1100m) for a clear-air panorama, walk Pawna Lake at sunset for camping (₹1500-2500/tent operators), and stop at Maganlal Chikki and Cooper's on Bazaar Road. Book weekday stays — Saturday traffic on the expressway can add an hour. Tiger Point opens at 6am; arrive by 7 for the cleanest light.
