2nd century BCE Buddhist chaitya — among the oldest and largest rock-cut prayer halls in India
The Great Chaitya at Karla (cave 8) is one of the best-preserved ancient Buddhist prayer halls — massive pillars, a vaulted ceiling, and a stupa at the far end. The Ekvira Devi temple at the entrance draws Hindu pilgrims.
2nd century BCE Buddhist viharas — less crowded sister to Karla with unique carved stupas
Bhaja predates Karla and has 22 rock-cut caves including a chaitya and several viharas with carved stupas. Less visited than Karla, so more peaceful. The waterfall behind the caves in monsoon is dramatic.

A Satavahana-period twin fort — Shrivardhan (2710ft, east-facing) + Manaranjan (2510ft, west-facing) — guarding the Bor Ghat trade pass that Shivaji captured from the Adilshahi in 1657 CE. Rajmachi village at the base has a 12th c Kedareshwar temple and water tanks cut into laterite. Peak interest Jul-Sep monsoon (the meadows flower + fireflies swarm post-monsoon) and Oct-Feb cool window. ₹0 entry; ASI-listed protected fort. Combine with Kondhane Buddhist caves (16 caves, 1st c BC Hinayana, 8km W of Rajmachi village).

Signature: walnut fudge
Noshir Cooper's 1935 fudge shop near Lonavala station — the Irani-Parsi family that invented the chocolate-and-walnut Lonavala fudge style. Run today by niece Rashna Phiroze Irani; the recipe and the original counter haven't moved. The dry plum cake (Christmas months) and mawa cake (year-round) are the under-known stocks.
Tip: Walnut and chocolate fudge sells out fastest — go before 4pm. Cash + UPI; cards iffy. The three-piece sampler tray packs cleanly for the drive home.
Signature: peanut chikki (gud-dana)
Lonavala's 145-year chikki institution — Bhivrajji Agarwal started selling his son Maganlal's gud-dana (jaggery + peanut + ghee energy snack) to Bombay-Pune railway labourers in 1880. By early 1900s the Central Railway Board approved on-train sale; the snack went out wrapped in teak/banana leaves. 4th generation now runs the Main Bazaar counter.
Tip: The Main Bazaar flagship near Lonavala station is the original — ignore the dozens of impostor 'Maganlal' shops on the highway (trademark disputes are a running local joke). Peanut + dry-fruit chikki are the safe orders; strawberry fudge is the Mahabaleshwar crossover.
Signature: mixed-nut chikki
National Chikki Mart Pvt Ltd is Lonavala's second-oldest chikki house (Maganlal 1880 is older; National 1922 is next). Larger counter format with 60+ chikki + namkeen + fudge SKUs; manufacturer profile on IndiaMart confirms the 100+ year operation. The mixed-nut slab (peanut + cashew + almond + til) is the calling-card.
Tip: Online dispatches from nationalchikki.com — pack-and-courier desk runs same-day; if you're short on space, post it home. Roasted-channa chikki (jaggery + roasted gram, no peanut) is the Maharashtrian heritage variant.

Founded in the mid-50s by Shri Dev Shankarji Vyas — Lonavala's third-oldest chikki house after Maganlal (1880) and National (1922). Smaller-than-the-giants counter format, family-run, cleaner peanut-chikki signature with less sugar. The crushed-chikki (broken slab + jaggery sugar) is the local breakfast-with-tea order.
Tip: Counter-only; avoid impostor 'A-1' knockoffs near the bus stand — the original is a step inside Main Bazaar. Cash + UPI only.

Lonavala's hill-station cafe answer to the Pune Koregaon Park original — Continental breakfast + bakery counter + multi-cuisine kitchen, set in a wood-and-stone building 5 mins from the bazaar. The closest Lonavala gets to a proper sit-down breakfast scene (most everything else is takeaway counters).
Tip: Monsoon (Jun-Sep) crowds hit 11am-2pm; arrive 9am for the breakfast spread. The wood-fired pizza is the safer evening order; sandwiches are spotty. Cards + UPI.
Signature: unlimited Gujarati-Rajasthani thali
Lonavala's unlimited Gujarati-Rajasthani thali institution since the early 90s. 96-seater banquet-grade dining hall, pure-veg, hot rotis dropped continuously. The Apr-June aam-ras (Alphonso season) is the only date-window order; the Gujarati weekend tourist crush comes for the shrikhand and puran poli year-round.
Tip: Sat-Sun lunch 12.30-2pm has 30-min waits — book +91-2114-273801. Weekday lunch walks in. Cards + UPI.
