Lolab Valley in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Heavy snowfall closes roads and isolates the valley most of January
January buries Lolab Valley under deep snow. This hidden meadow valley in Kupwara district sits at 2400m, surrounded by dense deodar forests, and in winter it resembles something from a fairy tale—frozen streams, snow-laden trees, smoke rising from scattered Gujjar huts. Temperatures: -8°C to 2°C. No tourists. No infrastructure. Just 40 km of untouched white valley.
The January story
Lolab is one of Kashmir's best-kept secrets in any month, but in January it's essentially unknown to the outside world. The valley stretches from Sogam to Kalaroos caves, and in winter the road may be partially blocked by snow. Local Gujjar and Bakerwal families maintain their pastoral life regardless. The Kalaroos caves—rumoured to have a tunnel connecting to Central Asia—are inaccessible in snow but the valley floor offers stunning snowshoeing if you bring your own gear. There is no hotel; you stay with local families who offer remarkable hospitality and simple Kashmiri meals—rogan josh, nadru (lotus stem), and kehwa (saffron tea). The army maintains a presence here, so carry valid ID.
