Lolab Valley in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Go in May — meadows peak with wildflowers, nights remain cold above 2400m, and crowds stay minimal in this remote valley.
Peak crowds
May is one of Lolab Valley's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Busiest spring–early summer and autumn when weather is favorable; winter is slowest.
May is Lolab Valley at its absolute peak. Every meadow is green, every stream is full, the forests are dense and alive, and wildflowers create carpets of colour you'd think were Photoshopped. Temperatures: 15-25°C. Bangus Valley above is accessible and might be the most beautiful alpine meadow in India that nobody visits. A few adventurous Kashmiris come on weekends, but foreign and domestic tourists remain virtually absent.
The May story
If you visit one hidden destination in all of India, make it Lolab-Bangus in May. The Bangus meadow sits at 3500m, ringed by snow peaks, carpeted in wildflowers, with zero infrastructure and zero crowds. The trek from Lolab takes 4-5 hours through dense forest. Camp by the stream. Wake to peaks turning gold at dawn. Walk back the next day. That's it—and it's more than enough. In the valley itself, the famous Lolab walnuts are forming on trees. The Kalaroos caves are fully accessible and fascinating—geological formations and cool air on a warm day. The handful of local dhabas in Sogam and Chandigam villages serve fresh Kashmiri food. Carry your camping gear, respect the land, leave nothing behind.
