Fair
Lolab Valley in July
Jammu & Kashmir, India
July monsoon arrives in Lolab. Rainfall is moderate compared to the rest of Kashmir, but trails get muddy and leeches appear in the forest. The valley is impossibly green—every shade from emerald to lime. Temperatures: 18-28°C. Clouds hang low over the ridges. The streams swell. Very few visitors even attempt the valley in monsoon.
The July story
Monsoon Lolab has a raw beauty that rewards the prepared traveler. The deodar forests in rain produce an aroma that expensive candle companies try to bottle and fail. Waterfalls appear on every cliff face. The Gujjar families at high pastures are living their most traditional life—milking, making cheese, weaving. If you can reach Bangus in July (doable with a good guide and waterproof gear), the meadow is knee-deep in wildflowers and wrapped in mist. But be honest about your tolerance: leeches are real, trails are slippery, and if something goes wrong, help is hours away. The Kalaroos caves stay dry inside and make an excellent monsoon refuge.
