Kaza in a day — possible but punishing
Start at Key Monastery (12km, 20 min drive) — the iconic Spiti postcard view of the monastery perched above the valley. Arrive by 8am for soft light and before tour buses.
Drive up to Hikkim (14,400 feet) for the world's highest post office — buy postcards, get the stamp, genuinely send one home. Then Langza (12km) for the Buddha statue + Jurassic-era marine fossils scattered in loose scree.
Loop back via Komic (world's highest motorable village) — lunch at Komic Monastery's basic kitchen. Return to Kaza by 4pm, rest — altitude fatigue will hit.
Stroll Kaza market. Pick up peas + barley bread at a local dhaba. Early night. You've covered 60km of 3600m+ terrain and your body is working hard.
itinerary.badWeather
Dust storms and sudden snow happen even in peak summer. Fallback: Key Monastery alone (shortest drive), then return to Kaza for a Sakya Tangyud Monastery visit + market day. Do not attempt Langza/Hikkim in fresh snow — the roads have no guard rails.
itinerary.threeDayHeading
Day 1Arrival + acclimatize — do nothing
Arrive Kaza (from Manali, Shimla, or Kinnaur). Check in. DO NOTHING else today. At 3800m, first-day exertion is how you end up evac'd to Reckong Peo.
Dinner at your homestay. 2L of water minimum. No alcohol. Bed by 9pm.
Day 2Key + Kibber loop
Key Monastery — 2–3 hours including prayer session attendance.
Drive to Kibber (16km) — wildlife officers here can guide winter snow leopard spotting. Summer walks pass through barley fields.
Optional: Chicham bridge (Asia's highest suspension bridge). Or return to Kaza for rest.
Kaza market. Spiti Heritage Cafe for an actual coffee.
Day 3Langza + Hikkim + Komic + Komic Monastery
Langza first — Buddha statue at sunrise is the pilgrim moment. Fossils scattered behind the statue in scree slopes.
Hikkim post office — send the postcards. Lunch at Hikkim homestay kitchens (cold weather = hot Spitian tingmo steamed buns).
Komic — visit Tangyud Monastery (claimed to be the highest motorable village monastery). Return to Kaza.
Day 4Exit toward Tabo / Dhankar / Manali
Onward: Dhankar Monastery (70km) for a cliffside 1200-year-old gompa, then Tabo (94km) if heading Kinnaur-direction. Or turn back for Manali via Kunzum Pass (open Jun–Oct only).
itinerary.fiveDayHeading
Day 1Arrival — acclimatize aggressively
Arrive, check in, do nothing. Same as the 3-day plan.
Day 2Key + Kibber
Key Monastery. Deep dive, not a photo stop.
Kibber + optional Chicham bridge.
Day 3High-altitude village loop
Langza (Buddha + fossils).
Hikkim (post office).
Komic (highest village).
Day 4Dhankar + Tabo
Drive to Dhankar — the cliffside monastery. Short trek to Dhankar Lake if fit.
Onward to Tabo. The 1000-year-old Tabo Monastery is a UNESCO tentative site — frescoes rival Ajanta.
Day 5Pin Valley or exit
Day trip to Pin Valley National Park (home to the Pin Valley pika and snow leopards). Or begin the exit drive toward Manali (Kunzum) or Kinnaur (Khab → Reckong Peo).
