Har Ki Doon in March
Uttarakhand, India
Snow patches still block the trail at 3565m, making the hard trek unpredictable in early March
March at Har-Ki-Doon is the cusp month — winter handing over to trek season. Daytime at Sankri climbs to 8-10C, nights -3 to -8C. At Har-Ki-Doon valley (3,566m) daytime peaks at 0C and nights still drop to -15C. The trek route reopens commercially in the very last week of March on weather-dependent declarations. The first 10-15km from Taluka through Osla clear by mid-March; the upper Har-Ki-Doon meadow holds snow and ice on the trail through to the last week of April. Govind National Park entry fee ₹150 + ₹100 camera fee for Indian trekkers, paid at the Govind Vanya Jeev Vihar check post after Netwar. Sankri base GMVN guesthouse runs at ₹1,200/night (book through gmvn.in 2-3 weeks ahead). Most operators sell their first March departures in the last 7 days only. The standard itinerary is 4 days minimum: Day 1 Dehradun-Sankri, Day 2 Sankri-Taluka-Osla campsite, Day 3 Osla-Har-Ki-Doon and overnight at the meadow campsite, Day 4 return to Sankri. Carry full winter kit, non-slip footwear, microspikes for the upper sections.
