Har Ki Doon is a U-shaped glacial valley at 3,565m in the Govind Ballabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarkashi district. The trek starts from Sankri village, passes through Taluka and the pre-Mahabharata settlements of Osla and Seema, and climbs through oak and rhododendron forests before opening into the valley. It is one of the oldest named treks in Garhwal, the valley is associated with the Pandavas' final journey, and the 4-5 day out-and-back itinerary makes it one of the most accessible 3,500m+ treks in India.

You develop a mild headache, nausea, dizziness or loss of appetite above roughly 2,500m within 6–24 hours of arrival.
Then
Stop ascending. Rest at the current altitude for 24–48 hours. Hydrate aggressively. If symptoms worsen or fail to improve, descend 500m and seek medical help. Never ascend further while symptomatic — HAPE and HACE kill quietly.

Public transport: State buses Dehradun–Purola–Sankri (daily, uncomfortable). Shared sumos from Purola more flexible.

EMERGENCY · SOURCE-VERIFIED
The last inhabited village on the Har Ki Doon trek, at 2,559m. Wooden Someshwar temple (locally associated with the Pandava story of Duryodhana) is the centre of village life. Homestays here are the overnight halt before the final push.

Alpine lake at 3,600m surrounded by Kalanag (Black Peak) and Bandarpoonch. Adds 2 days to a Har Ki Doon itinerary but delivers the best Swargarohini-alternative view. Few campsites; permit-managed.
Crosses from Har Ki Doon valley into Baspa valley (Kinnaur) at 5,450m. The ancient shepherd route. Not a day hike — requires ropes and guides, but the approach from Har Ki Doon is itself spectacular.
The Osla temple is dedicated to Duryodhana — the only such temple in India. Built and maintained by the inhabitants of Saur village (10km below Sankri) who worship the Kauravas as their ancestors. Wooden architecture in regional Garhwali style, with intricate carvings. Inside Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, accessed only via the Sankri-Taluka-Osla foot trail.

WHERE TO EAT · 5 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: Garhwali kafuli
Forest View Resort is one of two Sankri properties that genuinely cook Garhwali (rather than the default north-Indian menu) — kafuli with mandua roti (finger-millet flatbread, dark and chewy) is the authentic combination, and they grow some ingredients on-site.
Tip: Order the mandua roti by request — they only make it on advance ask. Most days the default chapati is wheat.
Signature: Veg thali (govt)
GMVN (state tourism) runs a basic 6-room rest house at Sankri with an open canteen — meals are pre-set thali style, reliable and cheap. Open year-round (the only Sankri eatery that doesn't close in deep winter Dec-Feb).
Tip: Winter trekkers (Kedarkantha Dec-Feb season) — this is your only reliable hot-food option once the private hotels shut down.
Signature: Aloo paratha with curd
A small family-run dhaba inside Hotel Swargarohini (one of the original Sankri guesthouses from before the trekking boom). Open 6am-9pm; serves the simple north-Indian-plus-Garhwali menu that local porters and guides also eat — a reliable indicator of food consistency.
Tip: Ask for the rajma chawal — Sankri-area Garhwali rajma (red kidney bean) is grown at 2000m+ and has a distinctive nutty taste different from plains rajma.
Signature: Pre-trek dal-chawal-roti thali
Sankri (1950m) is the road-head — the last commerce before the 12-day Har Ki Doon trek loop. Swargarohini Adventure is one of 4-5 operator camps that run a dining hall open to walk-in trekkers between Apr-Jun and Sep-Nov (Govind Pashu Vihar permit-only window). Plate sizes are calibrated for trekker calorie loads.
Tip: Pre-trek night — eat the thali by 7:30pm. Sankri sleeps by 9pm and the kitchen shuts. Forest Dept permit checkpoint is 200m away.
Signature: Pancakes + filter coffee
The most western-style cafe in Sankri — caters to the 60% non-Indian trekker traffic that comes for Har Ki Doon, Kedarkantha and Bali Pass. Pancakes (rare anywhere in the upper Tons Valley), proper espresso machine, eggs on toast. Closed Dec-Feb (Sankri loses power for weeks during heavy snow).
Tip: Wifi is unreliable, but they have the only consistent power-bank charging stand in Sankri — ₹50 for a 2-hour charge.
