Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary.
Hampi is sold as a pure-heritage destination — most itineraries don't mention that India's only dedicated sloth bear sanctuary sits 15km away. The 82 sq km reserve (notified 1994) hosts ~120 sloth bears and works on a watchtower-viewing model (no jeep safari), which doesn't match the safari template most wildlife travellers expect, so it falls off most circuits.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
India's first sanctuary dedicated specifically to the sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), notified 1994 across 82 sq km of dry deciduous scrub. The Karnataka Forest Department has built a single watchtower at Bilikallu Reserve Forest edge where bears emerge 3.30-6pm to feed on jaggery placed daily on the boulders. Sighting probability 70-80% in dry months (Nov-Apr). Entry ₹250 + ₹100 watchtower; gate opens 3pm. Combine with Tungabhadra Dam (8km onward). No food/water inside — carry your own.
