Monsoon floods make ancient ruins inaccessible and pathways treacherous
June in Hampi is the first ease. The southwest monsoon hits Kerala around June 1, and over the next two weeks spillover crosses the Western Ghats and reaches the Tungabhadra basin with 60-90mm of rainfall across 6-8 wet days — short late-afternoon thunderstorms that drop daytime temperatures 4-5C from May's peak. Daytime 35-37C, nights 24-26C, humidity climbing past 65 percent. The boulder field stops re-radiating to lethal temperatures but stays uncomfortably hot 10am-5pm. The open-air ruin walks compress to 6-10am and 5-8pm. Virupaksha morning aarti at 6:30am, Vittala 9am, Royal Enclosure quick walk before noon, then AC museum or hotel pool through the heat, then Hemakuta Hill sunset. Tungabhadra river runs visibly fuller — coracle crossings smoother. The post-monsoon green that defines October-November Hampi has not arrived; the boulder field still shows its dry-season ochre-and-grey colour. Hotel rates remain at off-peak: Evolve Back Kamalapura ₹12-14k, Heritage Resort ₹3-4k, Hospet rooms ₹700-1,500. Functional only for budget travelers with no flexibility. The October 15 window is materially better.
