# 18 things to know before Hampi in December

Hampi is a 4,100-hectare UNESCO site you walk through. You cannot see it from a car. In June it's 42°C and you give up by lunch. In December it's 22°C and you can actually do the thing you came for.

Eighteen specifics.

The two banks

1. Hampi has two sides. The south bank (Hampi Bazaar / Virupapura Gaddi side) is where the temples, ruins, and most day tours concentrate. The north bank (Hippie Island / Anegundi) is where the budget guesthouses, cafés, and riverside vibe live. The river in between is the Tungabhadra.

2. The only official way to cross the river is the coracle boat ferry at Virupapura — operates roughly 07:00–18:00, shuts completely after sunset. There is no bridge near Hampi Bazaar. Plan your sleep accordingly.

3. If you sleep on Hippie Island and the ferry breaks down (it happens — coracle damage, river flow), the detour is 30km by road via the Anegundi–Kampli bridge. Keep your phone charged.

Getting there

4. Hampi has no airport. Hubli (160km, 3.5h drive) is the nearest. Belagavi (200km) is an alternative. Bangalore (340km, overnight bus) is the most common rail/road approach.

5. The Hampi Express (Bangalore Yeshvantpur → Hospet) is the classic overnight train — departs Bangalore around 22:00, arrives Hospet 07:30. From Hospet it's a 13km auto-rickshaw (₹250) to Hampi Bazaar. Book 30–60 days ahead in December.

6. State buses (KSRTC / Rajahamsa) Bangalore → Hospet run every hour. 8–10 hours overnight, ₹800–1,200 AC sleeper. Less reliable than the train but flexible.

When to walk what

7. Virupaksha Temple opens 06:30 — be there at sunrise for the best light and no tour-group noise. It's the only part of Hampi that is still a working Hindu temple.

8. The Royal Enclosure / Zanana / Elephant Stables complex takes 3 hours. Cover it between 14:30 and 17:30 when the sun is soft. Noon will defeat you even in December.

9. Matanga Hill sunrise is the single best view of the Hampi landscape. Walk up in the dark, 45 minutes from Virupaksha Temple. Torch required; the first 10 minutes of the path is uneven. Come back down before 09:00 — the hill is not safe to descend in mid-day heat for unfit walkers.

10. Anjaneya Hill (Hanuman's birthplace, north bank) has 570 steps. Do it at sunrise or just before sunset. Monkeys are plentiful; don't carry food in the open.

Rules, tickets, logistics

11. A single ₹40 (Indian) / ₹600 (foreigner) ticket covers the Zanana / Elephant Stables complex and is valid for multiple enclosures on the same day. Buy at the Zanana gate — don't let touts sell you it twice.

12. Virupaksha Temple camera fee: ₹50 for a still camera, ₹500 for video. Drone flying is illegal across the Hampi World Heritage Area — the ASI will confiscate.

13. Hippie Island is officially an alcohol-permitted zone; south-bank Hampi Bazaar is officially dry. Most guesthouses on the north bank have a liquor licence. Restaurants in Hampi Bazaar do not — bring it with you or eat across the river.

14. The Vijay Vittala Temple with the stone chariot is 3km from Virupaksha. You can walk it, but the road is hot and dusty. Rent a bicycle (₹150/day at Hampi Bazaar) or a moped (₹300/day). E-scooters available at a few places on the north bank.

Weather, stays, food

15. December daytime: 22–28°C, nights 14–18°C. Mornings before 07:30 can be cool enough for a light sweater. No rain. UV still strong by mid-morning.

16. Mosquitoes at dusk on the north bank. Dengue cases are low but present. Long sleeves after 18:00, repellent with DEET.

17. Hotels in Hampi Bazaar are basic (most are small homestays under ₹2,000). Mid-range (₹3,000–6,000) is on the north bank: Padma Guest House, Goan Corner, Mowgli. The ₹10,000+ tier is at Evolve Back Hampi, 25km away toward Kamalapura — a different experience entirely.

18. December is a shoulder-season month in Hampi — busy but not sold-out. The Hampi Utsav (state cultural festival) moves around but is usually early January. If you want to overlap, book a week after Christmas and stay through the festival.
