Gurez Valley in March
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Closed. The Razdan Pass shows zero signs of opening. March in Gurez means 6-10 feet of snow on the ground, temperatures at -10°C to 0°C, and complete road closure from the outside world. The valley operates on its own rhythm — livestock that wintered in lower sheds begin moving. Local life continues as it has for centuries, disconnected from the rest of India. Military helicopters are the only external contact. There is no mechanism for a tourist to reach Gurez in March. The earliest possible access is late May, and that depends entirely on snowfall patterns.
The March story
Continue planning. The permit process through Bandipora DC is straightforward but requires: passport-size photos, ID proof (Aadhaar or passport for Indians; passport for foreigners — note that some nationalities are restricted), and a stated purpose of visit. Foreign nationals should check current restrictions with the DC office directly. The road from Bandipora to Dawar via Razdan Pass is 86 km and takes 3-4 hours in good conditions. There are no fuel stations in Gurez — fill up in Bandipora. No ATMs in the valley — carry all cash you need. Mobile coverage is BSNL only and patchy. The valley has no hospital — the nearest is Bandipora. Medical emergencies are evacuated by military helicopter. This is not a destination for spontaneous travel; it rewards meticulous preparation. If you do that work now, the June-September window will be extraordinary.
