Gurez Valley in December
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Closed. Gurez Valley is sealed off by snow for the winter. Razdan Pass is impassable and will remain so until May-June. The 50,000 residents of the valley enter their annual isolation — no road access, limited communication, military supply drops. Temperatures range from -15°C to -5°C. The Kishanganga freezes in patches. This is one of India's most extreme inhabited environments in winter, and it is entirely inaccessible to visitors. Plan your Gurez trip for June-September. Apply for your Inner Line Permit starting in April.
The December story
The valley is sealed. There is nothing to do here as a tourist in December because there is no way to reach it. The 50,000 Dard-Shin residents will spend the next 5 months in near-complete isolation, maintaining traditions and survival systems refined over centuries. The Indian Army maintains presence through the winter via air supply. The Kishanganga continues flowing — rivers don't stop for snow. Use December to finalise your summer plan: permit application ready for April submission, accommodation booked at the J&K Tourism bungalow or Dawar guesthouses, vehicle arranged for the Bandipora drive, and a realistic 3-4 night itinerary that allows for weather buffer. The best preparation for Gurez is understanding that this is not a destination that accommodates you; you accommodate it.
