Cultural Context
Gurez is one of the most remote and beautiful valleys in Kashmir, sitting at 2,400m near the Line of Control with Pakistan. It was a major stop on the ancient Silk Route connecting Kashmir to Central Asia. The valley is home to the Dard-Shin people, an ethnically distinct community with Indo-Aryan roots who speak Shina and maintain unique cultural traditions. The wooden Habba Khatoon peak is named after Kashmir's most beloved poetess.
