Gurez Valley in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Gurez Valley is closed in January. The Razdan Pass (3300m) is buried under 10-15 feet of snow, the road from Bandipora is impassable, and the military controls all access. The valley's 50,000-odd Dard-Shin residents are cut off from the rest of Kashmir for 5-6 months straight — their winter supplies were trucked in before October. You cannot visit. No exceptions, no workarounds, no special permits. The valley exists in a state of complete isolation that predates roads, tourism, and even the LOC. Plan for July-September instead.
The January story
There is no payoff to describe because you cannot reach the valley. Use January to research and plan: apply for the Inner Line Permit through the Bandipora District Commissioner's office (processing takes 1-2 weeks), read about the Dard-Shin people — a distinct ethnic group with Central Asian roots whose wooden architecture, language (Shina), and traditions are unlike anything else in Kashmir. Study the Kishanganga River dispute (India-Pakistan arbitration, Hague 2013) for geopolitical context. Book accommodation in advance — Dawar has limited rooms and no online booking. The J&K Tourism bungalow and a handful of private guesthouses are your options. A planned Gurez trip is a successful Gurez trip; a spontaneous one usually fails at the permit or accommodation stage.
