Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in May
Maharashtra, India
Go May — PRIME 90-98% sighting, the safari-purist month; AC lodge essential, dawn safaris only.
Peak crowds
May is one of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Summer (March-May) is best for tiger sightings — animals come to water. Park closed July-September monsoon. Weekend permits sell out first.
May at Tadoba is the most extreme-but-rewarding month — 27-45°C, Vidarbha summer at full peak, water-scarcity at year-maximum. The 625 sq km core + buffer reserve has only 4-5 reliable waterholes left active; tigers, leopards, wild dogs, sambar, chital, gaur, sloth bears all concentrate there with religious predictability. Sighting probability 90-98% on a 2-3 night stay. The Madhuri tigress lineage (Telia sisters area in Kolara zone) photographable in absolute iconic waterhole shots. Reserve hours: morning safari 6.30am-10.30am, afternoon safari 2.30pm-6pm. Tuesday afternoons some zones closed.
The May story
May is the absolute safari-purist month — book core-zone safari ₹3,000-5,000/jeep via Tadoba official online portal 60+ days ahead. ₹500-1,500/person entry. Stay 2-3 nights at AC lodges with pools: Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge, Tigers Heaven Resort, Svasara Jungle Lodge, Tiger Trails Tadoba Resort (₹6,500-20,000/night with 2-3 safaris). Don't skip AC. Plan dawn safaris (6.30am-10.30am, mornings ~28-32°C tolerable) over afternoon (2.30pm-6pm 42-45°C brutal). 4-6 safaris over 2-3 nights. Tiger sighting probability 90-98%. Madhuri tigress lineage continues with current alpha females. Iconic shots: tiger drinking at waterhole at dawn or dusk. Pre-monsoon dust storms common; face mask + bandana for dust in open jeeps. Buddha Purnima May 26 brings no Tadoba-specific impact. Nagpur 150 km W gateway via NH-44 (4-5 hr drive); Chandrapur 45 km railhead. Avoid day-tripping in May heat — stay close to reserve, AC lodge afternoons in pool. Hotels at year-peak. Photography: May waterhole-tiger shots at year-best iconic. Madhuri/Telia sisters area in Kolara zone particularly rewarding.
